I have an elderly woman on the unit right now who’s been through hell and back again. STEMI, CVA, colitis, etc…she’s had a super rough few weeks.
Her husband is always at her bedside.
Helping her sip water through a straw, cutting up her food, adjusting her pillows.
All of it.
And this poor woman- the only way she can pass gas or have a bowel movement is to be held a certain way above the toilet,
Which she is too weak to do.
Every day, multiple times a day, her husband carries her to the commode.
And he holds his wife above the commode,
Sometimes for up to an hour at a time
So that she can empty out her GI tract.
It’s not pretty.
Definitely not the stuff of romance stories.
But it’s true love.
In recognition of all the newbies that have started in Aug.
I still vividly remember my first day as a naive bumbling doctor
Nurse: And remember never say the “Q” word.
Me: the “Q” word?
Nurse: yes…uttering that word will summon a flash flood of a thousand patients through the emergency doors, four hundred ambulances will magically park up, and a mass of patients requiring PRs will appear … chaos will ensue.
Me: *finally getting what she means* oh! You mean quiet!! Come to think of it…it hasn’t been too bad today!
